Titans Win Their Soccer Tournament

Art Ramirez scored three goals and Ricky Melendez added two as Cal State Fullerton shut out Cal State Los Angeles, 7-0, to capture the championship of the Titan Classic on Sunday at Cal State Fullerton.

The Titans and University of San Diego went 2-0 in the men’s soccer tournament with victories over Fresno State and Cal State Los Angeles, but the Titans had nine goals to San Diego’s seven.

Mike Smith scored first for Fullerton in the seventh minute, followed by Colby Jackson at the 21-minute mark. Ramirez scored his first in the final minutes of the first half, giving Fullerton (7-3-1) a 3-0 lead.

Ramirez scored the first two goals in the second half and Melendez, a reserve, added the final two.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

USC 3, UC Irvine 0--Isabelle Harvey opened the scoring with a goal at 40 minutes 34 seconds into the first half. Eric DeVitis took a Meghan Reppe ball and drilled it high into the right corner of the goal for the second goal at 51:59.

Kim Clark finished the scoring with a header into the left side of the goal at 75:19. Kim Puccinelli had nine saves for USC (6-4-1) and Kirsten Roy had six for UC Irvine (8-2-1).

In nonconference men’s water polo:

USC 7, UC Irvine 6--James Castle scored three goals, including the game-winner, to lift top-ranked USC over sixth-ranked Irvine (4-4). Jeff Powers tied the score, 6-6, on a man-up goal with 6:02 left in the fourth quarter. Jeff Bailey had two goals to lead the Anteaters.
