CLEVELAND VS. NEW YORK REPORT / Notes

Share

Angel third-base Coach Larry Bowa is being mentioned as a candidate to join Boston Red Sox Manager Jimy Williams’ staff to coach third base and the infielders, but Bowa said Tuesday, “That’s the first I’ve heard of it.” . . . Angel outfielder Garret Anderson and Dodger pitcher Chan Ho Park will be part of a major league all-star team that will take on a Japanese professional team during an eight-game tour through Japan Nov. 6-15. Cleveland’s Mike Hargrove will manage the team, which will also have Chicago Cub slugger Sammy Sosa and Boston shortstop Nomar Garciaparra.

Today’s Pitchers

INDIANS’ CHARLES NAGY (15-10, 5.22 ERA) vs. YANKEES’ DAVID CONE (20-7, 3.55 ERA)

Yankee Stadium

Time--1 p.m. TV--Channel 4.

Update--The Yankees like to make opposing starters work early in the game, taking pitches and going deep into the count, hoping that he will tire in the fifth or sixth inning. “They’re very patient,” Nagy said. “So you have to get ahead in the count and make them swing the bats.” After watching Jaret Wright get cuffed around in the first inning Tuesday night, Nagy might want to reconsider that strategy. Not only must Nagy make the Yankees swing the bats, he must make them swing at his pitches--preferably nasty sinking fastballs at their ankles.
