Warriors Sweep Singles to Win in Girls’ Tennis

Woodbridge, ranked second in Orange County, won all nine singles sets and defeated fifth-ranked Newport Harbor, 11-7, in a Sea View League girls’ tennis match Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

Adriana Hockicko swept in singles, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0, and Evangelina Soriano won, 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, for the Warriors (8-0, 2-0 in league), also ranked second in the Southern Section Division I.

Jenny Meyer and Megan Hawkins swept in doubles for Newport Harbor, 6-4, 7-6, 6-2. The Sailors are ranked fifth in Division I.

In another league match:

No. 1 Corona del Mar 17, Santa Margarita 1--Robyn Coleman and Katie Tenerelli swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, for host Corona del Mar (6-1, 2-0).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 18 1/2, Loara 2 1/2--Freshman Samantha Waller won, 6-1, 6-0, to improve to 27-0 in singles for Cypress (10-0, 3-0).

In the Freeway League:

No. 7 Troy 16, Sonora 2--Stacey Lee, Karen Eitan and Michelle Dinh combined to sweep all nine sets in singles while losing only one game for Troy (8-0, 2-0).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 17, Bolsa Grande 1--Nicole Lerma swept, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, for host Garden Grove (9-2, 5-0). Bolsa Grande is 3-2 in league.

Pacifica 14, Rancho Alamitos 4--Senior Sondra McNamara won in singles, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, for host Pacifica (9-0, 4-0).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 11 1/2, Western 9 1/2--Kelly Scanlan and Anne James each won two singles sets, then teamed for a 6-0 victory in doubles for Brea Olinda (9-3, 3-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 15, Costa Mesa 3--Christine Suh and Lucy Molnar swept in doubles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, for University (4-5, 1-1). Phuong Tran swept in singles, 7-5, 7-5, 6-3, for Costa Mesa (0-2 in league).

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 17, Huntington Beach 1--Sophomore Kelly Six improved to 31-2 in singles, winning 6-1, 6-0, 6-0 for visiting Esperanza (8-3, 1-1).

Marina 10, Fountain Valley 8--Sharon Foo and Leanne Lambert won in the third round of singles to lift visiting Marina (3-5, 1-1).

In Sunset League field hockey:

Edison 11, Westminster 0--Jessica Landis and Ann Wiles scored three goals each for Edison (7-0).

Santa Ana 1, Santiago 1--Erika Jimenez scored seven minutes into the second half to tie the score for Santa Ana (1-4-2, 1-4-2). Carla Lopez scored in the first half for Santiago (4-3-2, 2-3-2).

In Empire/Orange League girls’ golf:

Valencia 109, Katella 143--Nikki Glowin shot one-under 29 at Brea, making birdies on the sixth and seventh holes for host Valencia (10-0, 8-0).

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 123, Newport Harbor 155--Brenda Progar shot a three-over 39 for host Santa Margarita (6-0, 3-0) at Tijeras Creek.

University 110, Laguna Hills 118--Angela Won shot a two-over-par 33 for University (6-0, 1-0) at Casta del Sol.

In nonleague boys’ water polo:

No. 2 Foothill 9, No. 9 Capistrano Valley 8--Eitan Goldstein scored the go-ahead goal with 1:33 remaining for Foothill (7-2). Goldstein scored five goals for the Knights, who rallied from a three-goal halftime deficit.

Capistrano Valley is 6-6.

In the Empire League:

Katella 18, Loara 5--Jeff Pratt scored five goals and Chris Bishop had two goals, two assists and four steals for host Katella (12-2, 1-0).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 6, La Quinta 4--Tommy Lane scored four goals for Garden Grove (5-4, 1-0).

In the Golden West League:

No. 4 Servite 14, Saddleback 9--Jarod Cruzat scored four goals for visiting Servite (7-1, 1-0), which broke open a 6-6 halftime tie with five third-quarter goals.

Julian Gonzalez scored eight goals for Saddleback (8-4, 0-1).

Santa Ana 19, Westminster 11--Luis Lagunas scored seven goals and Fernando Jimenez added five for host Santa Ana (2-5, 1-0).

Tustin 17, Ocean View 3--Senior Chris Lancellotti scored a career-high 10 goals for Tustin (6-8, 1-0).
