Predawn Boat Fire Under Investigation

Share

Quick detection of an early-morning boat fire helped limit damage on the cruiser to about $600, a spokesman for the Newport Beach Fire and Marine Department said.

Sergio Giron, an employee at the Newport Landing restaurant, smelled smoke coming from the 61-foot vessel, Amigo, about 3:25 a.m. Tuesday, spokesman John Blauer said.

When firefighters arrived, smoke and flames were poking through the roof and vent next to the boat’s pilot house.

Firefighters on land and a Harbor Patrol fireboat attacked the blaze and limited the fire damage to the area above the stove in the main cabin, Blauer said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no reports of injuries.
