Wholly Holy

To walk into Uncle Jer’s--an eclectic Silver Lake shop with wafting incense, scented candles and All Things Mystically Cool--is almost like having, shall we say, a religious experience.

For sure, there are plenty of other global finds here, from handmade clothes created by local, hip designers, to cultural collectibles and world-trendy tchotchkes.

But it’s the sequined, iconic Our Lady of Guadalupe--her hands pressed together, head bowed in prayer--that dazzled us, as did a baby’s one-piece snap-on with la Virgen’s image on it.

And there’s more: handcrafted angels and crucifixes, ceramic cherubs, a silver-eyed milagro (used to help those seeking a miracle), a piggy bank with a halo-adorned Jesus and the words “Jesus Saves” on it, a whimsical nun puppet, and a bright plastic Madonna and Child piece--all for your home, your car and, whenever needed, some peace of mind.
