Elway Is Doing It His Way

John Elway was getting antsy standing on the sidelines. He couldn’t wait for Sunday’s game to start.

“I was tired of sitting and watching. I wanted to get in there,” said Elway, who returned to Denver’s lineup after a two-week absence and passed for two touchdowns in a 21-16 victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Elway, 38, showed he hasn’t lost his winning touch, guiding the defending Super Bowl champions to their 11th consecutive win over two seasons. Elway got plenty of help from Terrell Davis, who had his third career 200-yard rushing game.

“I felt good,” said Elway, who had been hampered by hamstring and back injuries.

Davis became the Broncos’ career leader in rushing touchdowns with 44 when he gave the Broncos a 21-10 lead on the third play of the fourth quarter with a two-yard run.

Davis, the NFL’s leading rusher, carried 30 times for 208 yards, while Elway was 13 for 27 for 185 yards, with two interceptions.

“He’s the best running back in the league,” Elway said. “He can do more than just run it. He can block and catch, too.”

The Broncos (6-0) beat the Seahawks (3-3) for the fifth consecutive time and for the 10th time in 12 meetings. Seattle lost its third consecutive game.

The Seahawks made it interesting in the final quarter after John Friesz replaced Warren Moon, who came out of the game because of the pain caused by a cracked rib suffered last week. Friesz passed to Mike Pritchard for a 59-yard touchdown with 10:34 left, and it was hang-on time for the Broncos.

Denver linebacker Glenn Cadrez ended Seattle’s last threat with 1:49 to go when he intercepted a pass by Friesz intended for Joey Galloway on a third-and-nine play at the Denver 27.
