Water polo

Kerr made 16 saves as the Anteater water polo team defeated second-ranked Stanford, 8-2, Saturday.

Kerr, the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation player of the week, has made 49 saves in his last three games. He spent the last two seasons backing up Tom Davis, but was ready for the job after spending the summer training, which included eight-hour shifts as a lifeguard.

THIS WEEK

Cross-country: Twice this year, Christy Villa has finished third in races won by Arizona’s Amy Skieresz, one of the top runners in the nation. “The first time, I couldn’t believe I could still see her at the finish,’ Villa said. “The second time, I was determined to keep her in sight.” The Anteater men and women compete in the Triton Invitational Saturday at UC San Diego.

Golf: Irvine concludes its fall schedule in the Lexus Classic at the Sunnyside Country Club in Fresno Friday and Saturday.

Men’s soccer: Offense had been a problem for the Anteaters, who have suffered four 1-0 losses. Tyler Theslof, Pat Lee and Shaun Callahan scored in a victories over Portland and San Diego. Irvine opens Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play against second-ranked UCLA at 7 p.m. Friday at Irvine. The Anteaters host Sacramento State at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Women’s soccer: Irvine’s 0-0 tie with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Friday was its third consecutive scoreless game--two of which were losses. Simon Ferrara scored four minutes into the game Sunday and Nicole Bucciarelli scored her ninth goal in a victory over UC Santa Barbara. Irvine plays at Long Beach State Friday and at Pacific Sunday.

Water polo: Sixth-ranked Irvine scored the first six goals to put No. 2 Stanford down early. A rematch may loom in the Northern California Tournament at Stanford Saturday and Sunday. Irvine also plays California Friday at Pleasant Valley Diablo Valley College.
