Old Rivals Again Fit to Be Tied

A year has passed and things have changed for the Simi Valley High and Camarillo girls’ tennis teams. Simi Valley is still in the Marmonte League. Camarillo is a charter member of the new Pacific View League.

Other things are the same.

The teams that tied for the Marmonte League championship last season were tied again Wednesday in a nonleague match at Camarillo. After playing to a 9-9 deadlock in which each team won 67 games, the Scorpions and Pioneers split six tiebreaker sets.

Camarillo--which won eight of nine regulation singles sets--prevailed on tiebreaker points, 28-22. The Scorpions (8-4) were awarded 14 unanswered tiebreaker points because Simi Valley (10-2) singles players Mindy Gondrez and Stacy Gunawan left the match early.

In another girls’ tennis match:

Calabasas 12, Beverly Hills 6--Shervin Saedinia and Vanessa Everly of Calabasas (10-0) won all of their No. 1 and No. 2 singles sets in a nonleague victory at Calabasas.

COLLEGE GOLF

Big Sky Conference Championships--Cal State Northridge showed dramatic improvement by finishing third in the women’s competition Wednesday at Sun Brook Golf Course in St. George, Utah.

Cheryl Musser and Kelly Carlson each shot 239 and finished tied for sixth for the Matadors, who finished eighth out of nine teams last year.

Northridge shot 972, 56 shots behind winner Northern Arizona. Eleanor Pilgrim of Northern Arizona shot 223 to win the individual title.

In the men’s event, Anthony Marciano of Northridge had a three-round total of nine-over-par 222 and tied for seventh.

Northridge finished last with a team score of 924, 40 strokes behind winner Portland State. Brian Hughes of Portland State shot 212 to win the individual title.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Pacific View League meet No. 2--Danny Finley of Camarillo placed second to help the Scorpions to a 30-62 victory over runner-up Rio Mesa in boys’ competition at Arroyo Verde Park.

Finley clocked 17:02 over the three-mile course and junior Shad Hopkins was fourth in 17:24 as Camarillo had five runners among the first 11 finishers.

In the girls’ meet, Jeanene Gerry and Nicole Richardson of Camarillo placed 1-2 to help the Scorpions to a 30-62 victory over second-place Hueneme.

Gerry, who clocked 19:28 over the three-mile course, and Richardson, who ran 19:54, placed second and first in the first league meet.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Glendale 28, Arcadia 12--Joao Cepeda tied a school record with 12 goals in a Pacific League victory at Glendale (12-2, 3-0).

Royal 5, Newbury Park 1--Ryan Apperson scored three goals for the Highlanders (12-6, 2-1) in a Marmonte League match at Royal.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Sylmar def. North Hollywood, 15-6, 15-11, 15-11--Kassy Jimenez had seven kills and five blocks in a Valley Pac-8 Conference victory for the host Spartans (8-0, 6-0).

Crescenta Valley def. Arcadia, 15-2, 15-11, 11-15, 15-9--Melinda Moulden had 14 kills for the Falcons (8-3, 4-0) in a Pacific League victory at Crescenta Valley.

MEN’S WATER POLO

Valley 12, Santa Monica 9--Brian Ellis scored four goals and Loran Leidinger added three for the Monarchs (10-9-1, 2-2) in a Western State Conference victory at Valley.
