* To everyone else, Akili Smith might have emerged from virtual obscurity, having gone from alternating with Jason Maas in 1997 to leading the nation in passing efficiency this season, but UCLA was already well aware of him. Smith completed 11 of 13 passes for 114 yards and rushed for an additional 58 yards and a touchdown in the first half alone a year ago at Eugene, giving Oregon a 24-20 lead. But he sat out the rest of the way because of a bruised shoulder, and the Bruins rallied to win, 39-31. The Ducks are quick to note the critical role their veteran offensive line has played in the success, but the UCLA line has allowed only two sacks in four games.

* The Bruins plan to have defensive end Kenyon Coleman back, though in a reserve role for now. He has missed most of the last three games because of a sprained knee ligament. But the boost on the line comes as the injuries continue at linebacker. Michael Wiley is out because of a sprained ankle--he will have missed three consecutive games because of that injury or a back problem--and Ramogi Huma probably will play only if necessary, UCLA hoping he can rest his troublesome hip back to full strength. Cornerback Ryan Roques has three interceptions in as many games.

* Key to the game: Other than which team will have the most oxygen masks available for their offensive players, that is. The UCLA offensive line will look to dominate the smaller Oregon defensive front. Establishing the run will force the Ducks to rely on their eight-man front and gambling style of attacking, which the Bruins hope to make them regret.
