Washington Cuts Cal in Half, 21-13

In a tale of two halves, Washington’s 21 points in the first outdid California’s 13 in the second, as the Huskies defeated the Golden Bears for the 16th consecutive time, 21-13, on Saturday.

Quarterback Marques Tuiasosopo, starting his second game in a row in place of injured starter Brock Huard, had two scoring runs in the opening quarter for the Huskies. Joe Jarzynka added a 91-yard punt return for a score in the second quarter for Washington (4-2 overall, 2-1 in the Pacific 10).

The Huskie defense sacked Golden Bear quarterback Justin Vedder 13 times and stopped California (4-2, 2-1) at the Washington one in the fourth quarter to secure the victory.

“I’m kind of a little dazed by the whole thing,” Bear tackle John Welbourn said.

“That team was out there to kill me, to take me out of the game,” Vedder said. “They told me that a couple of times.”

The Huskies needed all the defense they could get in the second half because they didn’t have much offense. Cal held Washington to four first downs and 70 yards in the final 30 minutes.

Jarzynka used a little technology on his return that put Washington ahead, 21-0, with 4:44 left in the opening half.

“I looked at the big screen to see how close behind they were,” he said. “I said, ‘Man, I can’t believe how far back they are.’ ”
