Trip Starts With Legace in Goal

The Kings learned Monday that they will begin their first long trip of the season with two goaltenders who have been toiling in the minor leagues.

Starting goalie Stephane Fiset and backup Jamie Storr suffered injured groins in Sunday’s 5-5 tie with Colorado. Fiset will make the five-game Eastern swing, but he will not be available to play Wednesday night against undefeated Florida (2-0-1). Instead, Manny Legace, farmed out to Long Beach before the season, will start.

Legace was 4-0 with the Ice Dogs, with a 1.75 goals-against average.

Fiset is called day-to-day, with a possibility that he can play Friday at Tampa. Storr was put on the injured list Monday, which means he will be out for at least seven days. Alexey Volkov was recalled from the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, where he is 8-0, also with a 1.75 goals-against average.

At 18, Volkov, selected in the third round of the entry draft as the 76th overall pick, will draw additional attention in Halifax as the youngest former Moosehead to dress for an NHL game.

Fiset and Storr were injured in the third period Sunday, Fiset early in the period in making a save. He continued to play until 7:13, at which time he was relieved by Storr with a 5-3 lead.

Storr was injured while making a quick move to his left for his first save and continued to play, giving up two last-minute goals in the tie.

Florida also has injury problems, with veteran winger Scott Mellanby and center Chris Wells both having missed time because of groin strains. Center Steve Washburn has a broken finger and probably will not play.

Joe Sakic’s controversial goal in the second period Sunday night for Colorado was the first short-handed score against the Kings in 18 power plays. On No. 19, the Kings scored their second power-play goal of the season. They’ve also had two short-handed goals in their four games.
