Notes
Padre General Manager Kevin Towers said he expects Dave Stewart, who doubled as pitching coach and assistant general manager this season, to be pursued by more than a few clubs after the World Series and doesn’t expect him back as pitching coach in 1999.
Stewart ultimately hopes to become a general manager and says that the next logical step for him would be to serve as a department head, such as farm or personnel.
“Our pitchers have had a lot of success this year and a lot of that is because of Stew,” Towers said. “But I don’t want to keep anyone in a role where they’re not happy. Stew wants to broaden his front-office experience as quickly as he can. His current responsibilities are a steppingstone.”
