Greenpeace Activists Continue Port Protest

Share

Environmental activists who chained themselves to the crane of a cargo ship in Long Beach Harbor protested for a second day Wednesday, continuing to prevent the crew from unloading a shipment of Canadian newsprint.

The demonstrators from Greenpeace International are protesting the logging of old-growth rain forests in British Columbia and elsewhere around the world. They contend that the newsprint in the holds of the freighter Thorseggen was manufactured using wood chips from one of the largest temperate rain forests on Earth.

No arrests have been made so far. The U.S. Coast Guard lifted a 500-yard safety zone around the ship Tuesday night after security guards were posted on the Thorseggen.

Four Greenpeace members boarded the Thorseggen as it sailed into the Port of Long Beach on Tuesday morning. Two demonstrators suspended themselves by rope from the ship’s forward crane. Two others chained themselves to the crane’s steel supports.
