A Hearing on ‘McBeal’

Share

In discussing whether a show as non-PC as “All in the Family” could find a place on network TV today (“Those Were the Days--for Satire,” Oct. 13), neither Brian Lowry nor Norman Lear mentioned “Ally McBeal.”

This show has a wonderful ensemble cast, hilarious special effects and by far the best music ever. But its most striking virtue is witty, intelligent and thoughtful scripts. “Ally McBeal” truly is about something: the nature of human mating psychology and male-female differences therein.

Archie Bunker’s ignorant bigotry existed only to be ridiculed. But on “Ally McBeal,” ideas that are rarely even expressed on television are given a fair hearing.
