Mother to Be Charged in Burning of Girl, 7
A woman is to be arraigned Monday after being arrested on suspicion of burning her 7-year-old daughter with a steam iron to discipline the child for stealing about $2 from her purse, police said.
Christina Ramirez Gayosso, 28, burned her daughter on the thighs, leg and hand, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Steve Despenas said Friday. The girl was treated for second- and third-degree burns and taken into protective custody, he said.
The school nurse notified authorities after the girl complained that her hand hurt. Police say Gayosso turned herself in and was booked on suspicion of felony child abuse. She is being held in the Orange County Jail.
“The form of punishment that the child received was inhumane,” Despenas said. “There’s no reason to go to extremes.”
