Anaheim Has No ‘Unified’ District

Share

Your Oct. 18 story, “The Small-Class Shuffle,” did well pointing out what happens when a school district does its best for children but must accommodate three times as many students as the schools were intended for.

You even caught a tiny bit of what makes Principal Joan Petite so special.

However, I must point out that you made the same mistake that many local Anaheim residents make, calling the Anaheim City School District by the name Anaheim Unified School District.

There is no “unified” school district in the city of Anaheim. There is an Anaheim Union High School District, serving grades 7 through 12, incorporating several cities including Anaheim. It is so flush with property that it recently sold some.

Then there is the Anaheim City (Elementary) School District, serving kindergarten through sixth grade, almost entirely within the city of Anaheim. It is so packed with kids that all schools are year-round, double-session K-2 and the children must walk through the campuses with hands clasped behind their backs so they do not bump into each other.
