At Least the Pack Is Back in Win Column

The Green Bay Packers won for the first time in three games even though their sloppy play continued.

“We’re going to enjoy the win, no matter how sloppy,” safety Pat Terrell said after the Packers defeated the Baltimore Ravens, 28-10, Sunday. “A win’s something special in the NFL no matter how good you are or how bad you are.”

Brett Favre threw for two touchdowns and ran for one, Roell Preston got his third touchdown return of the season and LeRoy Butler finally was turned loose on the blitz. But Travis Jervey averaged only 2.5 yards in 29 carries and the still one-dimensional Packers committed nine penalties.

“We were sloppy in some areas, no question about that,” Coach Mike Holmgren said. “But it was a great win for us. We needed it.”

The Packers, who lost back-to-back games after their first 4-0 start in 32 years, won for the first time since Sept. 27.

Meanwhile, the Ravens (2-5) had their streak of quarters without an offensive touchdown extended to 13 before Jermaine Lewis scored on a 46-yard pass play in the fourth quarter, and lost their third in a row behind bungling quarterbacks Eric Zeier and Jim Harbaugh.

Green Bay’s defense went back to what it was doing earlier this season, stopping the run on early downs and forcing favorable down-and-distance situations. And Butler blitzed for the first time this year, constantly disrupting the Ravens. He also had his first interception of the season.

Favre was also back in form after throwing nine interceptions in three games. He handled the zone blitz well and passed to Antonio Freeman and Robert Brooks for touchdowns. His two interceptions came on deflected passes.
