A crushing hit by Eric Lindros of the Philadelphia Flyers woke up the Ottawa Senators, who erupted for three goals in a 3:40 span of the first period and held on for a 3-1 victory Thursday night at Kanata, Canada, ending a 12-game losing streak against the Flyers.

Lindros leveled Andreas Dackell in the left corner with 4:47 to play in the first period, sending the Swedish winger face-first into the glass. Dackell, who suffered a concussion and facial cuts requiring 30 stitches, crumpled to the ice and was motionless for several minutes while members of the Senators’ training staff tended to him. His face was bloodied as he was immobilized and carried from the ice on a stretcher.

No penalty was called but the first period was suspended with 4:47 remaining.

When play resumed, Ottawa came out flying. Chris Murray threaded a pass between defenseman Petr Svoboda’s skates and Radek Bonk redirected it with his backhand for his third goal of the season with 3:52 left.

Andreas Johansson, who made the team after a training camp tryout, scored the other two goals for the Senators.

St. Louis 3, Detroit 1--Geoff Courtnall of the Blues scored on a penalty shot midway through the third period at St. Louis.

Courtnall broke free of the Detroit defense after a feed from Scott Young and was bearing down on goalie Chris Osgood when Aaron Ward began hooking him to throw him off. Courtnall nearly scored anyway with a shot that banged off the right goal post.

On the penalty shot, Courtnall scored his second goal on a wrist shot that sailed over Osgood’s left shoulder at 10:43.

“Any time you score, it’s exciting,” Courtnall said. “But to get a penalty shot and have 20,000 people watching you, it’s a big relief when it goes in.”

New Jersey 2, N.Y. Islanders 1--Bobby Holik and Dave Andreychuk scored first-period goals and Martin Brodeur made 22 saves for the Devils at Uniondale, N.Y.

New Jersey, coming off a 4-0 home loss to the Kings on Wednesday night, won for the third time in four games. Jason Dawe scored for the Islanders.

Boston 1, Montreal 1--The Bruins had plenty of power-play chances against the Canadiens for the second consecutive game, but managed only a tie at Boston after rolling to a 9-2 victory the previous night at Montreal.

The Bruins had nine power plays each game, but converted only once Thursday when Steve Heinze gave them a 1-0 lead at 15:32 of the first period. On Wednesday, they scored five goals with a man advantage.

Montreal tied the score on Brian Savage’s power-play goal at 19:19 of the second period.

“We were fired up because they ran up the score on us last night,” Canadien Coach Alain Vigneault said. “They didn’t need to have their best power-play unit on the ice at the end of the game.”

Colorado 4, San Jose 2--Joe Sakic broke a tie midway through the third period at Denver with his fourth short-handed goal in five games as the Avalanche extended the Sharks’ season-opening winless streak to eight games.

Sakic, who tied the score at 2-2 with 3:02 to play in the second period, beat Mike Vernon with a low wrist shot at 7:03 of the third. Peter Forsberg set up the goal after stealing the puck in the neutral zone.
