Newport Harbor Runs Up 2 Victories

Newport Harbor’s Alicia McFall won the three-mile race at Corona del Mar in 17 minutes 13 seconds to help the Sailors sweep a Sea View League girls’ cross-country double-dual meet against Irvine and Corona del Mar Thursday.

Newport Harbor (2-3), the second-ranked team in the Southern Section Division II poll, defeated Corona del Mar, 22-33, and also defeated Irvine, ranked fifth in Division I, 24-31.

Liz Morse finished second in 17:24 for Corona del Mar (4-1), the top-ranked team in Division IV, which defeated Irvine 26-31.

In another Sea View meet:

Woodbridge wins twice--Jessica Kanin finished second in 18:53 over three miles at O’Neill Park for Woodbridge (3-2), ranked fourth in Division II. Woodbridge defeated Santa Margarita, 27-29, and El Toro, 25-32.

Lori Mann won the race in 18:36 for Santa Margarita (2-3), ranked third in Division II. Becky Miske finished third in 19:11 for El Toro (2-3).

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 15, Magnolia 50--Brea’s Jenny Thune finished the 3.1-mile course at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in 19:48, a new record. Thune set the previous record, 20:03, during the Brea Invitational on Oct. 3.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran wins two--Laura Bocanegra won the three-mile race at Arcadia County Park in 19:37 for Orange Lutheran (7-0), which pushed its consecutive league dual meet winning streak to 59 with victories over Sierra Madre Maranatha, 18-43, and Calvary Chapel, 15-50.

In Empire League boys’ cross-country:

Katella wins twice--Jose Herrera of Loara (4-1) ran 15:32 to win the three-mile race at Loara. Katella (5-0) defeated Loara, 20-41, and Cypress, 15-49, to win the league championship.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran wins twice--Taylor Gavin of Orange Lutheran (7-0) set a course and school record (15:43) on the three-mile run at Arcadia County Park. Orange Lutheran defeated host Maranatha, 22-33, and Calvary Chapel, 17-20. Maranatha (6-1) defeated Calvary Chapel, 21-37.

In Sunset League field hockey:

Santiago 8, Westminster 0--Glenny De La Cruz scored four goals as host Santiago (5-5-4) won a playoff game to qualify for the Tournament of Champions, which starts Tuesday.

In Empire/Orange League girls’ golf:

Valencia 144, Katella 176--Nikki Glowin shot a two-over 38 at Anaheim Hills to lead Valencia (16-1, 13-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

University 119, Aliso Niguel 152--Michelle Barth shot a one-over 37 at El Niguel for University (14-0, 7-0).

In the Sunset League:

Marina 102, Huntington Beach 127--Junior Courtney Goebel recorded three birdies for Marina, shooting a one-over 32 at David L. Baker. Marina (14-1, 8-0) clinched at least a tie for the league title.

In Century League girls’ volleyball:

El Modena 3, Villa Park 2--Michelle Armstrong had 26 kills for El Modena (8-6, 6-2), which rallied to win, 7-15, 9-15, 15-9, 15-10, 15-8. Jessica Koopman had 13 kills and 42 assists for Villa Park (6-8, 3-5).

In the Freeway League:

La Habra 3, Sunny Hills 0--Keao Burdine’s 11 kills led La Habra, 15-1, 15-9, 15-10.

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 3, Los Amigos 0--Becky Yong had six aces for La Quinta (13-1, 10-0), which won, 15-1, 15-3, 15-3, to clinch the league title.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 3, Brea Olinda 0--Katie Eatherton had 11 kills to lead Valencia, 15-8, 15-6, 15-12. Valencia (12-2, 8-0) clinched at least a tie for its 10th consecutive league title.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 3, Irvine 1--Lauren Heri had 21 kills and Sarah Ballog added 19 for Santa Margarita (7-4, 5-3), which won, 15-8, 8-15, 15-13, 15-12.

In nonleague water polo:

No. 3 Servite 14, Whittier La Serna--Michael Kim had three goals and four assists and Dane Jensen added three goals and three steals for Servite (15-3).

In the South Coast League:

No. 4 San Clemente 11, Mission Viejo 8--Mike Feeney and Scott Mochkatel each scored three goals for Mission Viejo (15-10, 2-2).
