San Diego Charger cornerback Terrance Shaw has been fined $10,000 by the NFL for “verbally abusing and berating” an official in Sunday’s loss to Seattle.

Shaw was fined for his behavior in arguing a simultaneous possession call after he and Seattle wide receiver Joey Galloway both came down with the ball. The Seahawks were awarded possession, Shaw was ejected and two plays later Ricky Watters scored on a one-yard run.

The Seahawks won, 27-20.

Al Davis and his Raiders left Los Angeles for Oakland in 1995, and the L.A. City Council made it official Friday that they’re not welcome back.

The council passed a special resolution spelling it out.

It reads, in part, “. . . the city will not in any manner support the return of the Raider organization to the city of Los Angeles or any organization involving Al Davis.”

There has been talk that Davis wants to return to the Southland. At present, the Raiders and the city of Oakland are locked in litigation.

In an unaccustomed role that he handled with aplomb, John Elway came off the bench last weekend to make a fourth-quarter pitch for a new, $360-million stadium to house the Denver Broncos.

To opponents of the stadium referendum, Elway’s 30-second TV ad amounted to piling on.

The ballot issue already is running ahead in the polls and has been bolstered by Denver’s Super Bowl victory in January and 7-0 start this season.

On Tuesday, voters in the six-county Denver metro area will decide whether sales tax money should be used to pick up 75% of the cost of a facility to replace Mile High Stadium.

Under the proposal, the penny-per-$10 sales tax that built Coors Field would be extended to 2012 for the football stadium. Bronco owner Pat Bowlen would pay the remaining 25%, about $90 million.

The proposal, which trailed in the polls after the Broncos were upset by Jacksonville in the playoffs two years ago, has gradually gained ground.

The New England Patriots put second-year defensive end Brandon Mitchell on injured reserve because of a broken right foot.

Mitchell made his first start last Sunday against Miami in place of injured right end Willie McGinest and posted seven solo tackles--including his second career sack--before suffering the broken foot late in the game.
