4 Female Pilots in WWII to Speak
Four retired female military pilots who flew missions during World War II will share their aviation experiences during a Sept. 10 dinner meeting of the Ventura County Professional Women’s Network.
Vi Cowden flew a variety of planes for the Air Transport Command. Bea St. Clair Thurston was a fighter pilot who towed targets for fighter drills using live ammunition. Margaret Weiss was an engineering test pilot, and Betty Jane Williams was an instructor. Williams was named Pioneer Woman of the Year by the Los Angeles City Council for her accomplishments during her long career in aviation.
The four were WASPs, or Women Air Force Service Pilots. Their presentation will include newsreel footage of WASPs in action. They also will answer questions.
The meeting is to start at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 10 and costs $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers.
It will be at the Marriott Residence Inn in Oxnard, and reservations can be made by calling 656-6011 or e-mailing VCPWN@aol.com.
The network is a nonprofit organization established in 1982. Its members seek to promote the professional and personal growth of Ventura County women through education, support and sharing of resources.
