The High Desert Mavericks defeated the JetHawks, 8-4, Wednesday night at High Desert, completing a sweep in their best-of-three California League playoff series and avenging a three-game sweep by the JetHawks to finish the regular season.

Brad Penny, the league’s most valuable player, pitched six innings, allowing two runs and striking out 10 for the Mavericks.

Frank Valdez scored on a wild pitch to cap a three-run ninth and the Suns beat the Chico Heat, 9-8, in their finale Wednesday night at Chico.

Valdez had three hits, including a run-scoring double that tied the score, 8-8.
