The City Council has made area businessman Gary L. Wartik the city’s business development consultant.

Wartik, a 21-year veteran in the consulting business and a 10-year resident, will serve part time to help retain local businesses and attract new enterprises. He also will consult with businesses considering expansion plans, helping them find available properties.

“I’m very excited, both personally and professionally,” Wartik said. “It’s a challenge, and there is a great deal of work to be done.”

Councilwoman Judy Lazar said Wartik would help strengthen the city’s business community.

“I think it’s great,” she said. “I think he is very much aware of the kinds of things that will be needed to encourage other businesses to move here.”

Councilwoman Linda Parks said she hoped Wartik would concentrate on helping existing mom-and-pop” stores.

The city will pay Wartik $72 an hour.

The appointment was made Tuesday.
