A 32-year-old inmate was found fatally stabbed and beaten in the shower area of the Men’s Central Jail on Friday, a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

Investigators believe the inmate, whose name was not released, was killed in a cell by a fellow inmate and that the man’s body was moved to the shower, Deputy Michael Irving said. Deputies found his body at 11:34 a.m.

The department released only sketchy details of the incident. Sheriff’s officials could not explain how the victim’s body apparently was moved without calling the attention of guards.

The inmate was described as a local gang member who was housed in a gang wing with 31 other prisoners. He was assigned to a cell occupied by at least one other inmate.

Irving said the victim, who was arrested May 11 by Los Angeles police for possession of a controlled substance and a parole violation, was last seen alive by sheriff’s deputies at 9 p.m. Thursday, after he returned to jail from a Long Beach Municipal Court appearance.

No weapon had been recovered.
