Wilma J. Allen has been named acting director of the Pasadena Public Health Department after the resignation of R. Dwight Lee.

Pasadena, along with Long Beach and Vernon, are the only cities in Los Angeles County to have their own health departments. Most cities are served by the county health department.

The position will be filled on a permanent basis in the next few weeks, said Acting City Manager Cynthia Kurtz. Under state law, a medical doctor must hold the position on a permanent basis, city officials said.

In Lee’s absence, officials said, Josephine Bufalino will be the physician advising the department.

Since 1996, Allen has been deputy director of 91-employee department, which has a $7.6-million annual budget.

During Lee’s tenure, the city opened the Pasadena Community Health Center.
