Arizona Sweeps Team, Individual Titles at UCI Meet
Arizona captured the individual and team titles in the men’s and women’s races of the UC Irvine Cross-Country Invitational Saturday at Central Park in Huntington Beach.
Arizona senior Amy Skieresz covered the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes 14 seconds and teammate Tara Chaplin followed in 17:22 to lead the Arizona women to victory with 51 points. UCLA was second, Northern Arizona third, and Irvine fourth in the 16-team field.
Irvine’s Christy Villa placed third with a time of 17:43 and the Anteaters’ Lisa Gillis was 12th in 18:26.
The Arizona men finished one-two-three to win the team title with 34 points. Arizona’s Abdi Abdirahman won the 8,000-meter race in 24:44.40, just ahead of teammate David Lopez (24:44.90) and Micheil Jones (24:47).
Sharam DeZahd posted Irvine’s top finish (35th) in 26:09.
In men’s soccer at the Southern California Classic:
Concordia 2, U.S. International 1--Concordia’s Shay Fox scored both goals, the second off a penalty kick in the 56th minute for the game-winner.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
Chapman 3, Redlands 0--Erika Chaney had 11 kills for visiting Chapman, which won, 15-7, 15-5, 15-6. Chapman improves to 2-0.
In nonconference men’s water polo:
UCLA 5, UC Irvine 4--Andrew Bailey scored two goals for UCLA (1-0), including the eventual game-winner. Jason Gabarra scored for Irvine (0-1) with 2:23 left in the game.
