A 50-year-old man was fatally injured Sunday in Huntington Beach when he fell from his bicycle in a bike lane and was hit by a van, police said.

The name of the Long Beach resident, who died of head injuries at the scene, was not released pending family notification, Police Sgt. Guy Dove said. The man was wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the crash, Dove said.

The accident occurred at 12:27 p.m. on Newland Street across the street from the Edison electrical power plant.

The man was pedaling in the bike lane when he apparently struck something and lost his balance, Dove said. The victim fell into the northbound lane of traffic, where a 1977 Dodge van struck him.

Dove said there was no evidence that either person involved in the accident was under the influence of alcohol.
