A Highland Park was convicted Thursday of the attempted murder of his girlfriend’s two toddlers.

A Los Angeles Superior Court jury convicted Ralph Ramirez on two counts of attempted murder after five days of deliberation. He could receive up to 31 years in prison.

Ramirez, 36, bound and gagged the children and left them in a bathtub filled with water in a Montebello hotel room last year. The 2-year-old girl and the 4-year-old boy survived after the boy was able to get out of the tub and go for help.

Both Ramirez and his girlfriend, Alejandra Munguia, 29, also of Highland Park, were also convicted on three counts of child abuse and corporal injury to a child. The jury deadlocked on whether to convict Munguia of attempted murder. Deputy Dist. Atty. Kathy Cady will announce Oct. 20 whether she plans to retry the woman on that charge.

The children have been in protective custody since the arrest of Munguia and Ramirez a year ago.
