Volunteers at the 14th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day will gather Saturday to collect trash and recyclable materials along miles of Los Angeles County beaches, organizers said.

Thousands of people are expected to aid in the cleanup effort, which will be held at 40 coastal and dive sites from Malibu to Long Beach, said Alix Gerosa, program director of Heal the Bay, which is coordinating the event with state and county officials and the city of Santa Monica.

Last year, participants collected 23,000 pounds of trash, including more than 237,000 cigarette butts and 91,000 pieces of plastic foam, Gerosa said.
