City Panel Rejects Service Station Plans

Residents near Chapman Avenue and Knott Street claimed a victory against Shell Oil Products Co. after the Planning Commission this week denied a proposed 24-hour service station for big-rigs, taxis and other fleet vehicles.

Commissioners voted unanimously to deny construction of the station on an 18,310-square-foot parcel at Chapman and Knott, zoned for commercial, rather than industrial, business.

Shell officials said the station would include a key-card system for commercial vehicles and diesel fuel. It would not have been open to the public.

Residents against the proposal cited concerns about potential noise and vandalism.
