Gov. Pete Wilson has signed into law a half dozen bills intended to increase the numbers and quality of California teachers.

A bill by Assemblywoman Kerry Mazzoni (D-San Rafael) sets up a pilot program to accredit six private colleges or out-of-state colleges with satellite campuses in California to train teachers. Currently, their graduates cannot teach in California schools.

A bill by Assemblywoman Susan Davis (D-San Diego) gives $10,000 bonuses to as many as 500 teachers who achieve difficult National Board Certification.

The other bills encourage the UC and Cal State systems to offer undergraduate minor programs in education to reduce the time it takes for teachers to get credentials, streamline credentialing for out-of-state teachers, provide loans for aspiring teachers who study math and allow students to do work-study programs in public schools.

Wilson announced the bill signings at a ceremony Thursday at a San Diego elementary school.
