Fans of ‘Dr. Quinn’ Plan Show of Support

Dismayed by the cancellation of a beloved television show four months ago, die-hard fans of “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” are planning a Sept. 28 rally at CBS headquarters in Los Angeles to prod the network into resurrecting the program.

Supporters of the western show, set in a small Colorado town in the late 19th century, miss the historical plots, moral values and progressive themes of “Dr. Quinn,” said Parrish Todd, an Agoura Hills fan who lives near Paramount Ranch, where the show was filmed.

“At a time when no one wanted a woman to do anything, except maybe teach . . . here was a woman doctor, and she made her way,” Todd said of the frontier heroine. “She became one of the most important people in the town.”

Citing financial concerns and a push to reach a younger, more urban and male audience, CBS dropped the series from its Saturday night lineup in May, after six seasons. The cancellation came as a surprise to the show’s star, Jane Seymour, who issued a statement at the time saying she was “stunned and devastated.”

Communicating over the Internet, Todd and other fans raised about $11,000 to run advertisements supporting the show in various publications, Todd said. The group’s goal is to persuade CBS, if not to reinstate “Dr. Quinn,” then to release the rights to the show so that another network could pick it up, she added.

Dozens of fans from around the country are expected to fly to Los Angeles for the rally, according to Todd. The group is also planning a Paramount Ranch tour and other “Quinn”-themed events Saturday and Sunday.
