College to Hold Special Election for Student President

Hoping to put last semester’s election controversy behind them, Ventura College student leaders have decided to hold a special election in October to select a student body president.

On Tuesday, the six-member Associated Students board set the election for Oct. 13 and 14 and adopted policies that prohibit campaigning those days.

Last semester’s controversy occurred in May after winning candidate Susan Carrasco was disqualified by a student election committee for allegedly campaigning too close to a polling place and ripping down her opponents’ signs.

Community college officials stepped in and claimed the students’ investigation was bungled.

Carrasco said she plans to run again, and college officials said no other candidates have stepped forward.
