A face-off between the New York Islanders and Nassau County officials ended Friday with a slap shot to fans when the team canceled its first home exhibition game over allegations its home arena is unsafe.

The Islanders’ game against the New Jersey Devils was canceled when both sides in the dispute were unable to come to an agreement about allowing an engineering firm hired by the NHL to conduct a safety inspection of the 26-year-old Nassau Coliseum.

Negotiations will resume Monday.
