Whittier Wins Middle Half and Beats Chapman, 24-14

Whittier outscored Chapman, 24-0, in the second and third quarters and went on to defeat the Panthers, 24-14, in a nonconference game Saturday at Whittier.
Chapman (0-3) took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter on Michael Williams’ 30-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Whittier quarterback Steve Luce, who had 369 yards on 18-for-35 passing, connected with Otis Carmichael on a 72-yard touchdown pass play to even the score, 7-7, before the half.
Whittier (2-1) erupted for 17 points in the third quarter. Luce completed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Snyder and hooked up with Carmichael on a 49-yard pass to put Whittier up, 21-7.
Whittier increased its lead to 24-7 on a Jason Kohler 19-yard field goal at the end of the third quarter.
Panther quarterback Greg Myland, who threw for 101 yards on 11-for-31 passing, completed a 34-yard touchdown pass to receiver Eric Del Conte for Chapman’s last score.
The Panthers’ defense held Whittier’s rushing attack to 37 yards in 27 carries.
