Hoffman Awaits His Fate, but Says He Wants to Stay With the Organization

Glenn Hoffman doesn’t know if he’ll be asked to return as Dodger manager, but he does know what his next choice would be.

“I’d like to stay in the organization. It’s home,” said Hoffman, who said he would take that option over seeking a managerial post elsewhere.

General Manager Kevin Malone has said he expects to make a decision next week on the fate of Hoffman, who took over when Bill Russell was fired in June.

Another Dodger who’d like to stay on the job is third-base coach Joe Amalfitano, who has been a coach for 30 years, longest current stretch in the majors. He has spent the last 16 of those years in Dodger blue.

“I want to stay,” Amalfitano said. “I feel I still have the knowledge and the energy to do what I’m doing.

“Now somebody else may read it another way. They say they are going to let us know soon, which is good because there is only a small window of opportunity to get another job and, if you want to stay in this business, you’d better get through that window as fast as you can.”

Amalfitano has managed the Chicago Cubs and also been a coach for the Cubs as well as the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres and Cincinnati Reds.

“I’ve worn every uniform with dignity,” he said, “but this one is kind of special because they’ve been so successful.

“It’s a nice place to work. I was born and raised here and I’m near family. It’s pretty good duty.”

Amalfitano is a big fan of Hoffman.

“He’s done a hell of a job,” Amalfitano said, “especially with all the injuries we’ve had.

“I’m also impressed with the work he does behind the scenes. He gets himself ready. He comes in early and looks at the statistics, looks at the scouting reports. That’s starting the day out right. Then, he comes out and talks to his players. I like that.”

Outfielder Raul Mondesi sat out his third consecutive game because of a sprained right finger.

Hoffman had hoped to get Mondesi back in the lineup before season’s end, but Mondesi remains questionable for today’s season finale.

“He was day-to-day,” Hoffman said. “Now, he’s just day.”

Also sitting out Saturday was fellow outfielder Trenidad Hubbard, who injured his back Friday swinging the bat.
