Texas’ Williams Runs for 318 Yards, 6 TDs

After being held to 43 yards last week, Texas running back Ricky Williams decided to make up for lost yardage against Rice on Saturday.

Williams rushed for a career-high 318 yards and six touchdowns as the Longhorns rolled to a 59-21 victory at Austin, Texas.

Williams, who had 30 carries, moved into second place on the NCAA career rushing touchdowns list with 60, behind Indiana’s Anthony Thompson with 64.

His previous career-high was 249 yards rushing against Rice (1-3) last season when he scored five touchdowns. He has 13 career touchdowns against Rice.

Williams scored on runs of 31, 16, 17, 29, 27 and 41 yards for Texas (2-2) and he tied his career-high of six touchdowns set in the season opener against New Mexico State.

Williams has 4,891 rushing yards, 10th on the NCAA career list.

No. 5 Kansas State 62, Northeast Louisiana 7--Michael Bishop threw for 441 yards and four touchdowns, including a record-breaking 97-yard scoring play, to lead the Wildcats over the Indians (2-2) in a nonconference game at Manhattan, Kan.

Bishop set a school record with 475 yards in total offense, as he completed 23 of 40 passes.

The Wildcats (4-0) have won 12 in a row, one short of the school record set in 1909-10.

No. 17 Texas A&M; 28, North Texas 9--Chris Cole caught six passes for 174 yards and three touchdowns as the Aggies shook off the effects of a forfeit and the loss of its star fullback for a victory at College Station, Texas.

Texas A&M; announced Wednesday that it had declared fullback D’Andre Hardeman ineligible and had forfeited a 28-7 victory over Louisiana Tech. Although Texas A&M; was 2-1 in actual games, the forfeit dropped it to 1-2 and made the North Texas (0-4) game critical for the Aggies’ bowl hopes.

Texas Tech 31, Iowa State 24--Matt Tittle threw two touchdown passes to lead the Red Raiders at Ames, Iowa.

The highly anticipated duel between Tech’s Ricky Williams and Iowa State’s Darren Davis didn’t materialize as both defenses loaded up against the run.

Tittle hooked up with Donnie Hart on three big plays that made the difference in the Big 12 opener as Tech (4-0, 1-0) achieved its best start since 1976, when the Red Raiders won their first eight games. Iowa State (2-2, 0-1) was denied its first three-game winning streak since 1989.

Kansas 39, Alabama-Birmingham 37--Zac Wegner threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Harrison Hill in the fourth overtime, then connected with David Hurst on the game-winning two-pointer to give the Jayhawks a nonconference win at Birmingham, Ala.

Wegner’s touchdown pass came on the Jayhawks’ first play of the fourth overtime against Alabama-Birmingham (1-2). Kansas (2-2) went for the two-point conversion and got it when Wegner found Hurst wide open in the end zone.

The victory ended the Jayhawks’ seven-game road losing streak.
