Nuclear Station to Test Alert Systems
Do not be alarmed by the siren you may hear Wednesday morning if you live within a 10-mile radius of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.
It is not the signal of a meltdown.
It is the annual testing of the station’s community-alert system. Fifty-two sirens in areas and communities near the station will sound twice between 10 a.m. and noon for two to five minutes each, said Ray Golden, a Southern California Edison spokesman.
The utility distributed fliers and educational materials to residents in Dana Point, San Clemente, Camp Pendleton and San Juan Capistrano to prevent panic. The sirens are required by federal law to sound in the event of a nuclear emergency.
The station can produce about 2,300 megawatts of power, enough to support 2.7 million customers in Orange County.
During the tests, an Edison representative will be at San Clemente Siren No. 7, in the Avenida Victoria parking lot, to answer questions.
