800 Summer Jobs Open to Youths Who Qualify

Share

Applications are available for about 800 Summer Youth Employment Training Program openings in the San Fernando Valley, and city officials said that those who submit them before the end of April have a better chance of getting jobs.

“The kids that get the jobs are the ones that are looking right now,” said Marian Aguilar, program director.

Program interviews begin in May.

Young people ages 14-21 who qualify can go to one of eight Valley locations to apply for the minimum-wage positions, which will be available for six weeks beginning July 12.

Participants will work 25 hours a week in government offices and nonprofit organizations in a variety of fields.

Participants will not only have the opportunity to get work experience, they will also take part in an academic enrichment program to sharpen basic reading, writing and math skills and to hone their job readiness skills, Aguilar said.

“They will learn their rights and responsibilities in the workplace and the importance of teamwork in the work experience,” Aguilar said.

To qualify, participants must be residents of Los Angeles, U.S. citizens or have the legal right to work; meet program income guidelines; or qualify for the school free lunch program, among other criteria.

Proof of eligibility will be required.

Applications are available at the Employment Development Department offices at 21010 Vanowen St., Canoga Park, and 1520 San Fernando Road, San Fernando; the Pacoima Youth and Family Center, 11243 Glenoaks Blvd., Pacoima; and the Van Nuys-North Sherman Oaks One-Stop, 14546 Hamlin Street, Van Nuys.
