Lindros Suffers Collapsed Lung

Philadelphia Flyer center Eric Lindros will sit out the remainder of the regular season because of a collapsed right lung, the team announced Friday.

Lindros apparently was hurt when cross-checked during the Flyers’ game at Nashville on Thursday, team President and General Manager Bob Clarke said. Television replays also showed Lindros falling on his stick in the first period.

Nearly three quarts of blood filled into the space where the lung collapsed, and doctors at Baptist Hospital in Nashville were draining the blood with a chest tube, the team said. Flyer team physician Gary Dorshimer said doctors in Nashville inserted a pump in the lung to help re-expand it.

Dorshimer said Lindros would be in Nashville for at least another two or three days. His status for the postseason will be determined when he returns to Philadelphia, Dorshimer said.

“Listening to Dr. Dorshimer and after talking to the doctors in Nashville, this is a serious injury,” Clarke said. “The players’ health is of major concern to us. We won’t be playing him until all doctors are very confident that his health is fine.”

Lindros spoke with reporters in the dressing room for several minutes after the Flyers’ 2-1 victory over the Predators on Thursday night and did not appear to be in pain. He awoke Friday morning with chest pain and went to the hospital.

Dorshimer said Lindros was in stable condition and resting comfortably Friday night.

Dorshimer said it would be at least a week before doctors could determine the length of Lindros’ recovery period and whether he would be healthy enough to play should the Flyers make the playoffs. Philadelphia is tied with Pittsburgh for second place in the Atlantic Division with seven games remaining in the regular season.
