An 18-year-old man was struck and killed by a van on the Ronald Reagan Freeway early Saturday as he retrieved his wallet, the California Highway Patrol said.

Jeffrey Wagstaff of Granada Hills was found in the carpool lane, officials said.

About 1:15 a.m., Wagstaff was a passenger in a vehicle traveling westbound near the Reseda Boulevard exit when his wallet fell out for an “unknown reason,” said CHP Sgt. John Lago. The vehicle Wagstaff was in later returned to the area where the wallet had fallen, Lago said.

While Wagstaff was retrieving the wallet, a Plymouth Voyager traveling in the carpool lane struck him, Lago said. Police would not release the name of the driver of either vehicle.
