The super late model races, fastest of NASCAR’s Winston Racing Series stock car classes, were spiced Saturday night at Irwindale Speedway by the appearance of a number of Winston West drivers eager to test the track conditions of the new banked half-mile paved oval in anticipation of their race June 19.

Austin Cameron of San Diego, who finished second in last year’s Winston West race at California Speedway, won the six-lap trophy dash and his 10-lap heat race, both in a Chevy Monte Carlo, before an announced crowd of 4,127. Cameron, 22, was Winston West rookie of the year last season.

Fastest qualifier was Ray Hooper Jr., of the Palmdale racing family. He averaged 98.90 mph in a 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo. Greg Pursley of Simi Valley, in a Ford Taurus, was second at 98.36 mph.
