Man Is Investigated in Killing of Dog That Bit Son

Animal cruelty officials are investigating a man in the fatal shooting of a Weimaraner after his son was bitten in the face at a friend’s house.

Authorities said the dog bit the 3-year-old boy, who had a cookie in his mouth, at a Sunday afternoon gathering in the backyard of the dog’s owner.

Matthew Reynolds, the boy’s father, drove his son and the child’s mother to St. Luke Hospital, then returned to shoot the dog three times, said Steve McNall, executive director of the Pasadena Humane Society.

The boy was released from the hospital Sunday after treatment for facial cuts, McNall said.

Pasadena police who responded to reports of shots in the 800 block of North Holliston Avenue about 6 p.m had to restrain the dog’s owner. Humane Society officers plan to interview Reynolds today to decide whether to file charges, which could include felony charges, McNall said.

“The law has been broken,” McNall said. “No matter how angry you are, you can’t take the law into your own hands.”

He added, “If you have a child and any animal, you need to keep an eye on them, and that is especially the case around food.”
