* Update--The Galaxy is struggling offensively, having scored only two goals--both by Clint Mathis--in 270 minutes. It is coming off a shootout loss at San Jose after beating Colorado and Dallas in shootouts at the Rose Bowl. Striker Carlos Hermosillo, somewhat surplus to requirements in last year’s record 85-goal season, apparently will be needed much more this year. But Hermosillo will not return until after the Mexican league season ends in May. And the more the Galaxy midfield struggles, the more the sale of Guatemala’s Martin Machon appears to have been an unwise move. Daniel Hernandez has not impressed as a starter and has squandered both his shootout attempts. Robin Fraser, the team captain, will be sidelined for another two to three weeks after undergoing knee surgery. The Crew will be without defender Matt Chulis and backup goalkeeper Matt Napoleon, both of whom are with the U.S. Under-23 national team that lost, 7-0, to its Brazilian counterpart Wednesday night in Brasilia. Columbus called in Mike McGinty from the Richmond Kickers of the A-League to replace Napoleon as Mark Dougherty’s backup. U.S. national team midfielder Brian Maisonneuve has returned to the starting lineup after recovering from an ankle injury. Columbus, which leads the all-time series against the Galaxy, 5-3, has won three of five at the Rose Bowl.
