Council OKs Funds to Fix Storm-Drain Problems
The City Council has voted to allocate more than $1.2 million to correct storm-drain problems that pose a threat to private and public property and public safety in eight locations, including three in the San Fernando Valley.
One of the remedial projects was in response to a lawsuit brought against the city because of water flowing across the roadway on Laurel Canyon Boulevard at Berry Drive in Studio City, causing hazardous driving conditions.
The Department of Public Works will construct a curb, gutter and catch basin in a four-month project scheduled to get underway in July. One lane of traffic will be closed during daytime hours while the work is in progress.
A project to extend a pipe from Mulholland Drive to Suffolk Drive, west of Java Drive in Sherman Oaks, to correct a drainage deficiency will also last four months, beginning in July. One lane of Mulholland may be closed during daytime hours during that time.
The DWP will replace vegetation removed from Little Tujunga Wash to protect 35 homes from the ravages of El Nino. The wash is a major flood channel.
The work will be done in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and will satisfy conditions of joint agreements with the Army Corps of Engineers, the Regional Water Quality Control Board and the Department of Fish and Game.
Wednesday’s council vote is subject to the approval of the mayor.
