Intergenerational Center Set to Cater to All Ages in 2000

Residents of all ages will find something under one roof when the North Hollywood Intergenerational Center opens in October 2000.

The center at 11480 Tiara St. will include a kitchen for senior meals, a 1,800-square-foot multipurpose room and a day care wing. Construction begins in July.

“It’s going to be a fantastic facility and we’re really looking forward to it,” City Councilman Joel Wachs said Thursday in a preview event at the site. “The center will transform a clunky police station into a landmark facility.”

The two-story building--home to the Los Angeles Police Department’s North Hollywood Division since 1958--was swapped in a land deal with the city’s Recreation and Park’s Department when police needed a larger station.

The building also was a favorite filming site for several movies and television shows, including “The Mod Squad” and “Unsolved Mysteries.”

The center was funded through a $160,000 payment to the Recreation and Parks Department as part of the land swap, with an additional $2 million from Proposition K funds, approved by city voters in 1996.

A second intergenerational center--once a nursing home--will be built in Panorama City after enough funds are raised, Wachs said.
