Volunteers to Walk for Children’s Health

Share

More than 500 volunteers from Ventura County are expected to take part next weekend in a Southern California-wide effort to bring low-cost health insurance to children.

The local contingent will attend a rally Saturday in Santa Maria before canvassing Ventura, Oxnard, Simi Valley and Santa Paula. About 10,000 volunteers of all ages in six Southern California counties will spend the day educating parents about their children’s health and encouraging them to enroll in Medi-Cal and Healthy Families, California’s new low-cost children’s health insurance program.

Teams of volunteers will distribute folders with information on immunization, lead poisoning, nutrition and HIV/AIDS.

HOPE for Kids, which is organizing the effort, aims to bring its children’s health message to 100,000 children and an HIV/AIDS message to more than 50,000 youth. The event is part of National Youth Service Day.

HOPE for Kids is still looking for volunteers from Ventura County. Leave a general message at (310) 665-0888 by Friday for more information.
