A Chatsworth man was killed early Saturday in a fiery crash on the Ronald Reagan Freeway, despite efforts by bystanders who pulled him from the burning wreckage, the California Highway Patrol said.

Daniel Joseph Benak, 25, was traveling westbound at high speed near the Reseda Boulevard exit around 2 a.m. when his Toyota Camry began weaving across the lanes, officials said. CHP Officer Mark Firkins said the Toyota went off the roadway, hit the guardrail and trees, overturned and caught fire.

Bystanders pushed the car upright, pulled Benak through the rear window and attempted to revive him with CPR, officials said. Los Angeles city firefighters put out the fire and determined that Benak was dead at the scene, Firkins said.
