Gay Mecca?

As a longtime resident of Palm Springs, I was a bit disturbed by Roslyn Moran’s March 21 letter advising people to avoid our unique and beautiful town because, as she says, it is a “homosexual mecca.”

In reality, ever since the 1930s, Palm Springs has been famed for its tolerance of diversity and its welcoming attitude toward all segments of society. Yes, we do have resorts catering to gays and lesbians, but we also have many others that reach out to families, singles, Canadians, nudists, gamblers, etc. One can see them all (although the nudists are clothed) wandering through downtown and having a grand time.

I’m sorry that Moran seems unable to accept our custom of offering hospitality to everyone who appreciates this special place.

What island has Moran been marooned on all these years? She says she’s offended by the open homosexuals who vacation in Palm Springs. Well, I’m offended by people who squeeze into stretch pants and polyester golf shirts and use too much hair spray. But that doesn’t stop me from vacationing in the desert, where one can meet all kinds of people from all over the world. Isn’t that what traveling is all about?
