City Council members will gather earlier than usual tonight to discuss a study released by the Orange County Fire Authority. The authority--which became an independent, joint-powers agency after the county’s 1994 bankruptcy--has been criticized for what is seen as inequitable and unfair funding procedures. Of the 19 cities that make up the agency, along with the county, officials with 12 of the municipalities believe that they pay more to the authority than they receive in fire services. Some cities even have considered withdrawing their contracts.

But Los Alamitos officials said that the stability of the authority is paramount and will recommend accepting the authority’s report without taking any action on it. The fire study meeting begins at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 3191 Katella Ave. The council’s regular meeting follows at the same location at 7 p.m. Information: (562) 431-3358.
